Numerous well-planned Ranger-led activities are offered by the U.S. National Park Service within the Redwood National and State Parks. Park Rangers and qualified staff lead a variety of seasonally available programs and activities within the parks that are free, informative, and fun for virtually all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Programs are generally available from mid-May through mid-September. Visitors are encouraged to check Park Program Schedules on the Redwood’s calendar feature: (http://www.nps.gov/redw/planyourvisit/calendar.htm). Schedules are available for both the North and South District Parks.
For a limited time every summer, Redwood National and State Parks present kayak tours of the Smith River…the crown jewel of the National Wild & Scenic River System and the largest free-flowing river system in California State. The tours are led by experienced Park Rangers. Visitors experience a variety of topics including the unique geology of the Smith River watershed and how it contributes to the growth of the world’s largest trees…all while paddling pristine waters and enjoying breathtaking scenery. As summer climate and conditions allow, tours begin at 11:30 A.M. (PT) on most Fridays and Saturdays at the Hiouchi Information Center located within the Redwood National and State Park. Rangers provide a brief orientation, basic safety information, and essential paddling skill instruction. Participants are then fitted for life jackets and mandatory helmets and shuttle to the boat launch located at Smith River National Recreation Area.
Based upon age, weight, and prior boating experience, participants are paired in tandem inflatable kayaks. The paddle trip covers approximately 3.5 miles through Class I and Class II water which includes flat water, riffles, and small rapids. Rangers guide each group through interpretive stops highlighting river geology and groves of ancient coastal redwoods.
The tour ends at the Jedidiah Smith Day Use Area where most paddlers will return to their vehicles via a one-half mile walk to Hiouchi Information Center.
